How to Plan an African Honeymoon
An African honeymoon is not a regular safari with champagne added. It is a different kind of trip, one where the lodge, the privacy, and the rhythm of the day matter as much as the wildlife. Pick the wrong lodge, too social, too open, too many other couples in shared spaces, and the whole purpose of the trip slips.
We have been arranging honeymoon travel since 2002, and the couples who enjoy these trips most are the ones who understand what they are choosing. This guide covers the destinations that genuinely work, how to combine safari with beach, golf, or city, and the practical details that turn a good trip into a great one.
What Makes a Honeymoon Safari Different
A lodge that works brilliantly for a group of friends or a family is not automatically the right choice for a honeymoon. The differences are subtle, but they matter.
Privacy is the design brief. A private plunge pool on your own deck, ideally looking out over a waterhole or open plain. An outdoor shower or bath. A deck big enough for sundowners without another suite in sight. Physical seclusion from other guests is what separates a honeymoon lodge from a merely excellent one.
Service that knows when to disappear. Present when you need it, invisible when you do not. A honeymoon is not the time for constant manager check ins or staged photo opportunities around gift deliveries. The right lodges look after you completely without ever making you feel watched.
Food and drink. A private dinner set up in the bush or on your own deck, on request, for honeymoon guests. Most lodges in the premium tier will arrange this if you tell them in advance. The truly good ones offer it before you think to ask. A bush breakfast after a dawn game drive, or a candlelit table under the stars with no other table in sight, is the kind of moment that defines a honeymoon safari.
The wildlife still matters. Romance does not replace the safari. You are still waking at 5:30am for a game drive, still scanning the bush for movement, still holding your breath when a lion appears at the waterhole. The difference is that you come home to a suite designed for two, not a room you happen to share.
Choosing Your Honeymoon Style
Every couple is different, and the right trip depends on what you both want. Some want pure wilderness and silence. Some want a beach to collapse on after the intensity of the bush. A few want golf in the mix. Nearly everything we arrange falls into one of five styles.
Pure safari. Three to five nights in a private game reserve, with morning and afternoon drives, sundowners in the bush, and evenings at the lodge. This is the classic format, and it works when both of you are genuinely excited about the wildlife. Sabi Sand in South Africa, the Masai Mara in Kenya, and the Serengeti in Tanzania are the strongest options.
Safari and beach. The most popular honeymoon format by some distance. Safari first, then the beach extension, or the other way round. Mauritius, Seychelles, and Mozambique all provide the Indian Ocean counterpoint to the bush. The rhythm changes completely: early mornings become lazy ones, game drives give way to snorkelling, and the soundtrack shifts from lions to waves.
Safari and golf. For couples where at least one partner plays, a few rounds on world class courses add another dimension to the trip. South Africa, Mauritius, and the Seychelles all handle this combination without either experience feeling compromised.
Safari and city. Cape Town and the Winelands as a post safari extension. Wine tasting, fine dining, Table Mountain, and the polished energy of one of Africa's most beautiful cities. This slots in particularly well as a three or four night extension after a safari in the Kruger region.
Train travel. Rovos Rail runs the romantic train journey through Africa, vintage carriages, world class cuisine, and landscapes unrolling past your window like a film. It is a different kind of intimacy, one built around shared meals, long conversations, and the gentle rocking of a train through the bush.
Safari and Beach Combinations
The safari and beach format exists for a reason. The bush is thrilling but intense, and you need a few days afterwards to process what you have seen, to sleep late, to do nothing at all. The Indian Ocean islands off Africa's east coast deliver exactly that.
Mauritius
Mauritius is the easiest beach extension from a South African safari, with direct flights from Johannesburg taking around four hours and luxury resorts in every style, from pristine beaches and world class spas to dining that would hold its own anywhere. For couples who play golf it is close to perfect. The Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort and Spa sits on a private peninsula beneath the UNESCO listed Le Morne Brabant, its 18 hole championship course wrapping around the lagoon. Constance Belle Mare Plage lines a two kilometre beach on the east coast with two championship courses, The Legend and The Links. Heritage Le Telfair and Heritage Awali give you access to La Réserve Golf Links, widely rated the finest course in Mauritius. Add the beach and the spa to the golf and you have one of the strongest honeymoon islands for active couples.
The classic shape is three or four nights on safari in the Kruger region followed by five or six in Mauritius, with a direct flight connecting the two.
Seychelles
The Seychelles are the more secluded choice. Smaller islands, more dramatic beaches, a more intimate atmosphere overall. Constance Lemuria on Praslin is home to the only 18 hole championship golf course in the country, set among granite boulders and tropical forest with the Indian Ocean glinting through the trees. The course is demanding but spectacular, and the resort pairs it with the kind of barefoot luxury that suits a honeymoon exactly.
Island hopping is part of the appeal, with Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue each offering their own character, and the Seychelles Golf Club on Mahé providing a relaxed nine holes. Beach, diving, and golf in one of the most beautiful island settings on earth make this a strong option for honeymooners who want variety.
Mozambique
Benguerra Island in the Bazaruto Archipelago is one of the most extraordinary beach destinations in Africa. andBeyond Benguerra Island Lodge sits on the second largest island in the archipelago, inside a protected marine conservation area, with private plunge pools, a PADI dive centre, and pristine coral reefs teeming with life. Dugongs, dolphins, and turtles are regular visitors to the surrounding waters.
Getting there is part of the adventure, a one and a half hour flight from Johannesburg to Vilanculos followed by a ten minute helicopter transfer to the island. With 12 casitas and one private villa, numbers stay small and the atmosphere stays intimate. For barefoot luxury with serious marine wildlife, Benguerra is hard to beat.
Zanzibar
Zanzibar is a different kind of beach experience, one built on spice culture, history, and the particular magic of Stone Town's alleyways. The eastern beaches around Pingwe and Paje hold quiet luxury resorts with kite surfing, diving, and snorkelling on the reef. A typical honeymoon combines three or four nights on safari in the Serengeti with four or five on the island, and the contrast between the dry plains of northern Tanzania and the warm, spice scented air of the coast is a large part of what makes the pairing so compelling.
Safari and Golf for Two
Golf and safari have more in common than you might think. Both demand patience, an early start, and the acceptance that the outcome is never entirely in your hands. On a honeymoon they slot together beautifully, morning game drive, midday downtime, afternoon tee time.
South Africa has the strongest golf and safari pairing of all. Leopard Creek Country Club, on the border of the Kruger National Park, is the most thrilling golf experience on the continent. Gary Player designed the course in 1996, and the Crocodile River runs along several holes with the Kruger bush on the far bank. Hippos are often visible in the water, and a distant elephant moving through the treeline is not an uncommon distraction. Fancourt in the Garden Route offers three championship courses, including The Links, another Gary Player design ranked among the world's finest. For couples where one or both partners play, three nights in Sabi Sand, two rounds at Leopard Creek, and a few days on the Garden Route make up one of the most complete post wedding trips we arrange.
Mauritius takes the golf honeymoon further, with beach and spa woven into the itinerary. The Paradis Beachcomber, Constance Belle Mare Plage, and the Heritage golf resorts all run stay and play packages where golf, meals, and spa treatments come bundled together. The partner who does not play is never left waiting, with the beach, the pool, and the spa while the other is on the course. The day expands rather than contracts.
The Seychelles offer Constance Lemuria on Praslin as the sole 18 hole championship option. It is a more intimate setting than Mauritius, and the resort's smaller scale suits a honeymoon where privacy matters more than variety.
Cape Town and the Winelands
Cape Town makes a natural post safari extension for couples who want city culture, fine dining, and wine after the intensity of the bush. Three or four nights is usually enough. Wine tasting in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek comes first, where estates like Delaire Graff and La Motte offer cellar tours and restaurants among the most acclaimed in the country. A drive down the Cape Peninsula to Cape Point, a visit to the penguin colony at Boulders Beach, and a sunset from Table Mountain round out the stay.
Golfers are well served too. Steenberg Golf Club, the only estate course on the Cape Peninsula, and Clovelly Country Club, set against the slopes of the Silvermine mountain range, are both within easy reach of the city centre.
Cape Town shines from October to April, when the days are long and the weather warm. Pair it with a winter safari in the Kruger, June to September, and the trip spans both of Africa's seasons.
Rovos Rail
Rovos Rail is the romantic train journey through Africa. Its vintage carriages have been rebuilt and restored to a standard that competes with the finest hotels, and the routes include the journey from Pretoria to Cape Town, the trip to Dar es Salaam through Tanzania, and the trail through Zimbabwe to Victoria Falls.
The train carries a maximum of 72 passengers, and the atmosphere is deliberately old world, wood panelled suites, white tablecloth dining, and an observation car where you can sit with a drink and watch the landscape change. Game drives are arranged at stops along the route, and the pace is unhurried. The Pretoria to Cape Town journey takes two days and covers 1,600 kilometres, passing through the semi arid Karoo and the wine growing regions of the Western Cape.
For honeymooners, Rovos Rail works as a standalone trip or as an extension to a safari. Two nights on the train between a safari in the Kruger and a few days in Cape Town covers the full spectrum of what South Africa offers. The Royal Suite, the largest train suite in the world, includes a private lounge, a full sized bath, and a personal bar, which is the kind of excess that feels entirely appropriate on a honeymoon.
When to Book and When to Go
Honeymoon planning takes more lead time than a standard safari, particularly if you are travelling in peak season, and the dates usually have to fit around a wedding that will not move.
Peak season (June to September) is prime safari time across most of Africa, and it is when honeymoon lodges are at their busiest. For Sabi Sand, the Masai Mara, and the Serengeti, book nine to twelve months in advance. Lodges like Singita, Londolozi, and the &Beyond properties sell out early, and last minute availability is rare.
Green season (November to April) offers better availability and quieter lodges, with newborn animals and dramatic landscapes as a bonus. The trade off is thicker bush and harder game viewing, but there is something genuinely special about a green season honeymoon, the lodge almost to yourselves and the bush alive with new life.
Beach extensions work year round, though Mauritius and the Seychelles are at their most comfortable from May to November, when rainfall is lowest. Mozambique follows the same rhythm, with clear water and calm seas from May to November that are ideal for diving and snorkelling.
Golf on the South African courses peaks from May to September, when the fairways are firm and the weather dry. Mauritius is playable year round, though the summer months from November to April bring higher humidity and the occasional shower.

Honeymoon Planning Tips
Tell your lodge. Say you are on honeymoon at the time of booking. Most premium properties will arrange a private dinner or an in suite surprise if they know in advance, and some include it as standard, but never assume it happens automatically. A line in your booking, or a call to the lodge a week before arrival, makes sure the team is ready.
What to pack. Neutral colours work for safari and city alike. Bring a fleece or warm layer for early morning drives, even in summer, plus lightweight, breathable clothing for the beach days. Golf clubs travel easily, but check your airline's sports equipment policy first. A wide brimmed hat, sunscreen, and binoculars fill the rest of the bag. Malaria precautions. The Kruger, the Masai Mara, and the Serengeti all sit inside the malaria belt. Talk to a travel health clinic four to six weeks before departure about prophylaxis, use a repellent containing DEET, and cover up at dawn and dusk. Risk peaks in the warm, wet months from November to April. If you would rather not think about it at all, the Eastern Cape of South Africa is malaria free, and the Seychelles carries no malaria risk whatsoever.
