The Maldives sells one idea: an overwater villa, turquoise water, and very little else. For some couples that is enough. One Golf Course Versus a Continent of Them

Here is the practical reality of golf in the Maldives. The country markets itself as the only golf destination of its kind, which amounts to a nine hole course at a single resort on Addu Atoll, at the far southern tip. It is a pleasant enough diversion, and the resort describes it fairly. But it is nine holes on one island, reachable only by a domestic flight from the capital, and it is the extent of golf in the entire country.

Africa is the opposite. A two week golf honeymoon in South Africa can take in Jack Nicklaus's Signature course at Pearl Valley in the Cape Winelands, the championship courses at Fancourt on the Garden Route, where Gary Player designed every layout on the estate, and Leopard Creek, which sits at the border of the Kruger Park with its entrance two hundred metres from the Malelane Gate. Your guide knows the waterholes and where the animals have been moving, and the morning unfolds on its own terms. A leopard in a marula tree. A herd of elephant blocking the road while you wait with the engine off, close enough to hear them feed. Seasonality That Works in Your Favour

The Maldives sits in the monsoon belt. Between May and October the southwestern monsoon brings rain and cloud to much of the country, and the surf season on one coast is the wet season on the other. Pick the wrong atoll and your paradise fortnight comes with grey afternoons.

South Africa's safari regions run on the opposite rhythm. The dry winter months from May to October are the prime game viewing season, when the vegetation thins, animals gather at water, and the days stay sunny and mild. The Cape is at its generous best from November to March, warm and dry through the southern summer, which is also when the Winelands and the Garden Route golf courses are in peak condition. The upshot is a golf and safari honeymoon with a long sweet spot across most of the year, and we build the itinerary around the month you are travelling.

A Journey Rather Than a Single Address

Perhaps the deepest difference is the shape of the trip itself. A Maldives holiday begins with a seaplane transfer and ends when you leave the island. Everything in between happens within a few hundred metres of your villa. That is restful, and for a couple emerging from wedding chaos, rest has real value.

A golf honeymoon in Africa is a journey. Cape Town and the Winelands, then the Garden Route with its clifftop fairways and coastal forest, then a flight north to a private reserve on the edge of the Kruger. Each leg changes the scenery, the food, and the mood. You arrive home feeling you have been somewhere, not merely stayed somewhere. For couples who share a love of golf and travel, that rhythm suits you far better than a fortnight of the same view.

The practicalities favour Africa as well. Direct overnight flights from London to Johannesburg or Cape Town mean you land in the morning and can be playing golf or watching your first elephants the same day. The Maldives, by contrast, often costs you the better part of two days in connections and transfers before the holiday even begins.
